EXHIBITION | VIDEORAMA

Videorama: Subversion, Absurdity, and Form in Austrian Video Art

TUESDAY DEC 01 - SATURDAY JAN 23

Video art has become a major artistic discipline due to the rapid technological development in the digital age.

Like many Austrian artists who question, criticize, or challenge political, social and cultural conditions of our time, the videos in this exhibition invite viewers to break with paradigms and embrace new modes of seeing. These works are often subversive and absurd in their nature, have an ironic or surrealist character, and contain surprising moments.

Since 2006, the ursula blickle videoarchiv, a collaborative project of the Kunsthalle Wien, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the Ursula Blickle Foundation, has collected 2,500 art videos. The focus of the archive is on Austrian video production of the last decade. Three jurors – Massimiliano Gioni, Sabine Himmelsbach, and Ian White – have selected 52 videos for the exhibition Videorama: Artclips from Austria, which is currently on view at the Kunsthalle Wien. Subversion, Absurdity, and Form in Austrian Video Art presents a sampling of works selected from the larger show in Vienna.
