COVERGIRL - How Lynndie England Became the Personification of Evil America, by Austrian playwright and director Barbara Herold will come to this year's United Solo Theatre Festival for a one-night-only performance by dieheroldfliri.at, an Austrian off-theater ensemble.
This play, about the torturers from the Iraqi military prison of Abu Ghraib and the pictures that went around the world in 2004 represents a careful attempt to answer a few of the questions surrounding what happened - without resorting to accusations or justifications. It moves constantly between documentary and fiction, between inner monologue and cabaret. First and foremost it seeks to express the speechlessness engendered by the images of Abu Ghraib and subsequent inquiries.
dieheroldfliri.at is an Austrian off-theater group. The group deals with current sociopolitically relevant questions, and takes an artistic stand. More than 40 performances of their second production, COVERGIRL – How Lynndie England became Evil America Personifed, have taken place throughout Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. In 2010 the group produced INS WEITE SCHRUMPFEN, by Katja Hensel, a play about ‘shrinking cities’ and other bizarre excesses of our globalized society. A new solo performance about one of the major disregarded humanitarian crises in Africa is in preparation: THE WORST DATE EVER after Jane Bussmann's novel, will premiere in April 2012 in Feldkirch, Austria.
