“Entrancing...This is no swoony love story. It intoxicates all the
same”--Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York
“Disquietingly funny...Imagine a Jane Austen drawing-room comedy as
directed by Michael Haneke and you’re halfway there.”--Justin Chang,
“Would you care to die with me?” Such is the absurd but wholly sincere proposal employed by the underappreciated, overwrought German Romantic writer Heinrich von Kleist (“The Marquise of O”) as he seeks a soul mate to join him in a suicide pact. After repeated rejections he finally strikes a chord in Henriette Vogel, a dutiful young wife and mother tempted by an alternative to the suffocating strictures of Prussian society. Filmmaker Hausner (LOVELY RITA, LOURDES) treats this bizarre but true 1811 incident with Kubrickian irony, locking her characters into exquisitely detailed, painterly tableaux and viewing their absurdities with a mixture of sympathy and sardonic humor, as her two unlikely lovers bumble their way toward immortality. In German with English subtitles. Special advance screening courtesy of Film Movement/RAM Releasing. DCP digital. (MR)
