Founded in 1984, The American Austrian Foundation’s mission is to foster exchanges between the United States and Austria in education, science, media and the arts. AAF’s very successful medical program has trained over 20,000 physicians from transition countries in the Foundation’s conference center at Schloss Arenberg in Salzburg over the past two decades.
Since inception, the Foundation has also supported annual cultural and educational initiatives such as :
1. Young Conductors Program: two young U.S. conductors spend four weeks at the Salzburg Music Festival, attending concert and opera rehearsals of famous conductors with the world's best orchestras.
2. Young Artists Program: Four young U.S. trained artists attend the Salzburg Summer Academy, which was founded by Oskar Kokoschka, for four to six weeks.
3. Arenberg Opera Camps for Children and Young Adults: a group of up to 30 youngsters spends one week at Schloss Arenberg where they are coached by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and a team of music educators. At the end of the week they perform their own abridged version of the opera they have studied.
