KARIN PLIEM: SYMBIOTIC UNIONS
THURSDAY DEC 08, - SATURDAY JAN 14
Claire Oliver Gallery presents Austrian artist Karin Pliem’s first solo show in the US.
Masterly formulated constellations of plant and animal elements, accents of human culture and civilization, allow a conceptual connotation with a “symbiotic union” – an idea that is fundamental for the functioning of nature and society. Contrary to common understanding, it is not only chance mutation and competition between the individuals that foster natural selection. As scientific evidence in biological field shows, it is the symbiosis between living organisms and their environment that is the main driving force behind evolution.
The living beings, that enter a conversation with one another in Pliem’s works, stem from various ecosystems and different parts of the world – from the tropics to the Alps, from deep-sea biotopes and vast plantations. During the process of painting, they hybridize into unnamed flora-fictions, “pulsating like an organism”, and becoming a “vegetal tissue”.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Karin Pliem is living and working in Austria. She studied with the sculptor Wander Bertoni and painter Carl Unger at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her exhibitions and publications cover subjects such as the nature and culture as productive opposites. While the former represents the original, the unspoiled, the latter is considered its transformation, if not its transcendence.
