MOVING SOUNDS FESTIVAL | SOUND WALK
KATRINEM: SCHUHZUGEHÖR_PATH OF AWARENESS MIDTOWN NY
TUESDAY SEP 15, 06:00 PM
SchuhzuGehör_path of awareness explores an individual's personal experience of space through walking, particularly the interplay between sound event (footsteps) and surrounding architecture. Using the ACFNY as a starting point, a route will be marked: a "path of awareness" offering a wide variety of opportunities to investigate the act of walking itself, characteristics of footwear and the walkability of urban space along with its architectural and atmospheric qualities.
The main requirements are a moderate walking tempo, a uniformity of movement, and a willingness to open up our auditory perception as much as possible. Let us confront this act of intentional listening amidst our own gait. This is how we can sense clear spatial thresholds-that is, transitions from one auditory space to another-and perceive minute spatial shifts. The shoes we wear along this way become soloists in space, instruments that enter into a dialog within the environment, provide us with spatial orientation, and locate us in space.
katrinem, lives and works in Berlin (D) and Linz (A). The examination of sound and space has long been an integral part of katrinem's artistic work. Gaits, walking rhythms and their imprints on public space were subject areas already being explored in her master's degree in composition. Currently, her research continues with my gait - Walking Rhythms in the Fabric of Urban Spaces, a practice-based PhD being completed at the University of Arts and Industrial Design in Linz. Since 2004, a series of projects concerned with imprints of our gaits in public space, and investigating the interplay of transitory spaces and public sites, have emerged under the title go your gait!. katrinem is continually broadening, challenging and refining her individual approaches to the subject of sound and space through exchange and collaborations with artists and researchers. Of particular mention are: Sam Auinger, Prof. Dr. Gernot Böhme, Annea Lockwood, Bruce Odland, Prof. Dr. Holger Schulze, Penelope Wehrli.
The sound walks will take place on September 14, 15 and 16 at 6PM and 9PM.
Visitors are encouraged to put on their most “sounding” shoes!
Please make sure to arrive on time as you cannot join the performance once it has started. Since there is no place to store your bags while on the tour, please travel light. Please be aware that you take these tours on your own risk. The ACFNY is not responsible if you get injured while participating in one of the Sound Walks.
