The Austrian Cultural Forum, in collaboration with the Dutch Consulate General, is pleased to present violinist Monica Germino and sound engineer Frank van der Weij in a multimedia program of contemporary works for solo violin and electronics. This duo from the Netherlands has been revolutionizing the concept of a solo violin recital by exploiting new technologies towards the transformation of sound and image. Amsterdam-based, Dutch-American violinist Monica Germino is constantly challenging the violin's conventional limits. Germino holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and Yale University, and performs primarily as a soloist - while also regularly appearing as part of an ensemble. Her broad repertoire includes works for acoustic, electric, and adapted violins. Monica Germino has worked with Louis Andriessen, Martin Bresnick, John Cage, Michael Gordon, György Ligeti, and Christian Wolff, among others. She plays a Joannes Baptista Ceruti violin from Cremona, while constantly exploring electronic sounds. Since 1999, Germino has been a member of the four-person ensemble Electra, performing with her own custom-made Violectra since 2003. A number of violin works were written for her, including a large-scale piece for electric violin by Jacob ter Veldhuis.
Dutch artist Frank van der Weij (b. 1962) studied contrabass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and has played bass guitar in numerous pop, rock, and punk bands. Van der Weij has produced numerous CDs and worked on the sound design and music of several TV and theater productions. Van der Weij owns a studio where he records, edits and mixes music projects and engages in his own electronic compositions, as well as compiling and adapting existing music for dance performances. Together with Monica Germino he has produced several multimedia programs such as plugged & unplugged which was performed in Canada, Europe, and the U.S.
