NY PREMIERE OF THE WALDHEIM WALTZ BY RUTH BECKERMANN AT NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL
FRIDAY, SEP 28 2018 - MONDAY, OCT 15 2018
An Austrian diplomat who served as Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1972 to 1982, Kurt Waldheim ran for the presidency of Austria in 1986. He was elected into office despite a controversy over his previously undisclosed role in the Nazi regime during World War II.
Ruth Beckermann documents the uncovering of former UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim's wartime past. Her latest film, THE WALDHEIM WALTZ, shows the swift succession of new allegations by the World Jewish Congress during his Austrian presidential campaign, the denial by the Austrian political class at the time, and the outbreak of new waves of anti-Semitism, using archival material and vintage video footage of anti-Waldheim rallies.
Running Time: 94 minutes. Language: German, French and English with English subtitles.
Most recently, the FAMA (Film and Music Austria) Jury nominated THE WALDHEIM WALTZ to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The winners of the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on February 24, 2019.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
One of Europe’s most admired documentarians, Vienna-born Ruth Beckermann studied journalism and art history in Vienna and Tel Aviv, and photography at New York’s School of Visual Arts. Over the last thirty years, Beckermann has consistently merged the personal with the political. Return to Vienna (1983), Paper Bridge (1987) and Towards Jerusalem (1991) form her trilogy of Jewish narratives of loss, memory and identity. Her most recent film, The Dreamed Ones, won both the SCAM and Young Jury Award at the 2016 Cinéma du Réel Festival. THE WALDHEIM WALTZ is Beckermann’s twelfth documentary, and won the Glashütte-Original Documentary Award of the Berlin International Film Festival.
