SEAD’S BODHI PROJECT TRAVELS TO NEW YORK CITY
THURSDAY, AUG 18 2016, 06:30 PM
Making use of the fantastic forum provided by the 35th Battery Dance Festival, eight Bodhi Project dancers will join the line up on August 18 and August 20 to perform Fragile Matter, choreographed by Jukstapoz founders Christine Gouzelis and Paul Blackman. Fragile Matter celebrated its European premiere in Salzburg in February 2016. A concise exploration of the body as a metaphor, the contemporary dance piece creates powerful tension and displays a unique choreographic craftsmanship.
ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERS
Christine Gouzelis graduated from the Athens State School of Dance (K.S.O.T.) in 2004 and joined the London-based Jasmin Vardimon's Physical Dance Theatre in 2005, where she went on to become rehearsal director. As part of her function at the Hellenic Dance Company, she worked with choreographers such as Wim Vandekeybus, Rootlessroot, Tony Lachky, Pascal Rioult and Athina Valha. In 2010, she took part in the renowned workshop '50days' with Master David Zambrano in Costa Rica and became a member of the 50collective. In the same year, she founded Jukstapoz Dance Theatre alongside Paul Blackman. In 2015, she was awarded an artist-in-residency at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA), where the recent piece Fragile Matter was created.
Following graduation from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2002, Paul Blackman was accepted as one of the first apprentices under guidance of Simon Dow and performed with the West Australian Ballet. In 2004, he joined the Buzz Dance Theatre together with Felicity Bott, performing within remote aboriginal communities. By 2006, he was working in New York City with the Battery Dance Company under Jonathan Hollander. In 2010, he was selected to participate in the '50days' workshop led by Master David Zambrano. In the same year, he founded Jukstapoz Dance Theatre togehter with Christine Gouzelis.
