WORKSHOP AND BOOK LAUNCH
SOCIAL DESIGN & SOCIAL IMPACT
THURSDAY MAY 03, 06:00 PM
As a special book-launching event of the English publication of Doris Rothauer's book Vision & Strategy - Strategic Thinking for Creative and Social Entrepreneurs (Birkhäuser, 2018), the Austrian Cultural Forum New York will be hosting a workshop for creatives and entrepreneurs.
In his groundbreaking 1970s book Design for the Real World the Austrian designer Victor Papanek, who emigrated to the United States in 1939, argued for the designer´s responsibility in shaping our economy and society by designing for the good. His claim for social and ecological awareness is more topical than ever. Designers are an important part of the "Change Maker" movement who contribute with their impactful design strategies to a better world. Designing for sustainability, for the common good, for inclusion are just some of the current issues and challenges.
But how to develop these design strategies and, at the same time, make it work as a business and for business? In this context, the phenomenon of a new social entrepreneurship has generated tools and methods that, fostered by clear visions, are driven by impact over mere profit. Bringing social design and social impact business modelling together, this workshop provides insights and tools for designers and other creatives aiming at designing a better future with their work. Topics covered in the workshop include best practice examples of social design, introduction into strategic thinking based on visions, and tools & methods from social entrepreneurship and impact business modelling.
Participation is free and open to the public. However, due to a maximum of 20 participants, priority will be given to designers, creatives, and industry representatives. Participation includes a free copy of Doris Rothauer's book Vision & Strategy - Strategic Thinking for Creative and Social Entrepreneurs as well as refreshments and a cocktail reception following the 1,5 hour Workshop.
Applications should include a short bio and statement of interest and may be sent via email (reference "Social Design & Social Impact Workshop" 3 May 2018) no later than 15 April 2018 to firstname.lastname@example.org
