SPECIAL CASES - COSMIC ROCKET
WEDNESDAY FEB 22 - SUNDAY FEB 26
Nives Widauer: Special Cases - Cosmic Rocket
Feb 22-26, 2017
In the framework of the exhibit VIENNA AND NEW YORK: 175 YEARS OF TWO PHILHARMONICS, Swiss-Austrian artist Nives Widauer created a sculpture from the original travel instrument cases of both the Vienna Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic in the ACFNY atrium. Vintage harp cases of the New York Philharmonic form the base of the rocket-like sculpture, while instrument cases of the Vienna Philharmonic were used to create the top. The installation is part of an on-going project of the artist together with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and will be on view for a limited time only, from February 22 to 26, 2017.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Nives Widauer (*1965 in Basel, based in Vienna) works in a variety of different media including photography, film, painting and sculpture, as well as stage design for theaters and opera houses. During the Lucerne Festival in 2011, Widauer discovered her fascination for the instrument cases of the Vienna Philharmonic that accompany the orchestra on its tours across the world. Widauer's experience traveling with the orchestra resulted in the book project Special Cases which will be published by Hatje Cantz in March 2017.
More of Widauer's work is currently on display in the ACFNY's group show CONSTRUCTING PARADISE, open daily through April 24. More information on Nives Widauer can be found >>here.
