CONCERT | SOUND INSTALLATION
STUDIO DAN / KRÜGER&PARDELLER
FRIDAY DEC 01, 07:30 PM
In their first US performance, the Austrian 10-piece ensemble Studio Dan presents the world premiere of a new work by composer Christian F. Schiller.
Part I: HOMO FABER
Krüger&Pardeller’s audio and room installation HOMO FABER, on display from November 2014 to June 2015 at the 21er Haus in Vienna, focused on the role of artists as the creators of new artifacts. The installation, its design reminiscent of a stage, juxtaposes historical sound recordings and works by Fritz Wotruba with texts and works from the artists themselves, connected by sound by Daniel Riegler (*1977).
The sound installation together with a photo documentary of the exhibition will be displayed at the Austrian Cultural Forum's theater in the hours before the concert. HOMO FABER's live-music will then be performed by the ensemble Studio Dan on stage. The cooperative work was documented on two CDs and an additional extended CD-booklet. This new release will be first presented this evening at the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York.
The second part of the concert will be the premiere performance of a commissioned piece by Christian F. Schiller (*1977). The piece derives from experiments with a harmonica which he inherited from his grandfather. Using an additional exact duplicate of the instrument, the composition is written for two harmonicas and ensemble. Schiller is considered one of the most interesting young composers in Austria by the ensemble and thus featured in this exclusive event. He has studied with Gerd Kühr and Georg Friedrich Haas at the KUG in Graz/Austria and has collaborated with Peter Jakober, Alfred Lenz, Helmut Schäfer, DD Kern, Mamela Nyamza, Manuel Knapp, Zbigniew Karkowski, Klangforum Wien, a.o. He is currently part of the project „Hathenter“ with Mick Barr and Colin Marston.
ABOUT STUDIO DAN
Founded in 2005 for the first JazzWerkstatt Wien festival, Studio Dan started as big band, but has since morphed to perform in various permutations, depending on the project. The group operates on the borders between diverse subgenres of contemporary music: improvisation, new music, jazz and art rock, and others. Studio Dan curates and produces new programs, concert series, and recordings, working alone or in cooperation with large institutions. Past projects included the presentation of works by Frank Zappa, Fred Frith, Anthony Braxton, Cornelius Cardew, George Crumb and Julius Eastman as well as emerging composers as Steve Lehman, Christof Dienz or Peter Jakober.
In 2016, Studio Dan brought new programs to several internationally-renowned stages as Wien Modern, Kampnagel Hamburg, musikprotokoll graz, and the Tagen für Neue Musik in Zurich. Past guest soloists and collaborations with Studio Dan include Vinko Globokar, Elliott Sharp, Michel Doneda, and Friedrich Cerha.
