VISIONS OF REALITY - MASTERCLASS BY GUSTAV DEUTSCH & HANNA SCHIMEK
WEDNESDAY, JUL 16 2014, 07:30 PM
In this masterclass Gustav Deutsch and Hanna Schimek will show and discuss their work on the feature film SHIRLEY – Visions of Reality, based on 13 paintings by Edward Hopper, focusing on the themes and subjects embedded in this project, such as:
- Dioramas, panoramas, and trompe-l'oil.
- Original copy and replication.
- Anamorphic and metaphoric archetypical furniture.
- Symbolic objects and artifacts.
"What we want to question is: why is the work of Edward Hopper predetermined for other artistic interpretations? What are the elements embedded in Edward Hopper´s paintings, the rules he followed, the scenes he focused on, that made them so iconic? What does copying or reproduction mean from an artistic point of view? What are the scenes and the characters of his paintings representing, signifying, that lies beyond their trivial appearance? Which art- and cultural historical influences beyond painting can be detected in his work? How is his work related to optical media like photography and cinematography? How influenced popular American culture his work, and how is it reflected through it? What can artists – from different disciplines – influenced by Hoppers paintings, and interpreting them in their own work, add to his?"
