MOSTLY CONTEMPORARY is an annual music series organized by the Austrian Cultural Forum New York. From September to December, it gives access to a wide range of mostly contemporary compositions that have never or rarely been performed. By playing with distinct contrasts, establishing lineages and temporary links, it testifies to the vital relationship between tradition and innovation, memory and progress. Some programs take the Second Viennese School as their starting point and progress toward present-day trends, while others are entirely dedicated to contemporary compositions from Austria and beyond.
MOSTLY CONTEMPORARY also explores the interface of microtonal and electronic music with so called "classical modern" repertoire. This fall season also features a special event in December: a presentation of the recipients of the prestigious Ring Award, which recognizes emerging talent for innovative approaches to contemporary opera production and design.
