Christian Eisenberger

Christian Eisenberger (born 1978 in Graz), studied visual media at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Working for and in the public sphere, he uses cardboard and other packaging materials to create installations that playfully challenge and question symbols of history and society. Eisenberger is also a performance artist whose body serves as the main prop in many of his pieces.

Eisenberger's performance works are often reminiscent of the Austrian actionists of the 1960s. In Clownbomber (Vienna-London, 2007), he combined the grotesque situation of suicide bombers with the tragicomic nature of clowns, because of the parallels he identifies between the two.

With Vietnam (Vienna-Glasgow, 2000-2008), Eisenberger de-contextualizes the famous photo taken by AP photographer Nick Út in 1972 during the Vietnam War. By reproducing the people in the photo on cardboard and installing them in public spaces, the artist allows passers-by to gain a multi-faceted perspective of the image and the situation.
