Bodies and Fractured Spaces
May 2009 to January 2011

Long-term exhibition at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York:

Most visitors to the Cultural Forum are familiar with the theater and the five-level gallery. Some have ventured up to Levels 4 and 5 to visit the Library, a welcoming place of knowledge and tranquility.

But to ensure that other areas of the building are dedicated to contemporary art, the Cultural Forum asked Austrian artist and curator Marko Lulic to put together a long-term installation for the reception areas on the Levels 6 and 11 in cooperation with several renowned galleries.

The body and space are two themes with a long tradition in Austrian art. The artists selected for the exhibition Bodies and Fractured Spaces each take a unique approach to subjects relating to the title. They work directly with their bodies (or the bodies of performers) in performative projects, not only relating to space, but also creating a new reading of space through the way they relate. Others approach the theme very differently through painting. Either they draw on abstraction to reveal the structure of space in form and content or they juxtapose references to constructs such as architecture, pop culture, and ideologies in their images. In installations and conceptual pieces, the artists question the physical laws of space just as much as the substantive and political laws that constitute space.

The exhibition is accessible to the public on request during opening hours and receptions.
