BEAUTY CONTEST | PERFORMANCE
CLARINA BEZZOLA | WHEN I WALK ALONE IN THE STREETS
WEDNESDAY, SEP 21 2011, 06:30 PM - 07:00 PM
In her performance, artist Clarina Bezzola plays the character of a man-devouring beast – walking through the streets of New York in an exotic red costume as she sings Musetta´s Aria from Puccini´s La Bohème: Quando men vo. Her character feels so immensely sexual and powerful that men who come near her can't help but drown in her giant toothed cleavage as they succumb to her charms. Protruding from her back is the giant hand of desperation, which she unknowingly drags behind herself - her futile attempt to slow down the unstoppable passage of time.
The performance will start at Duffy Square (46th to 47th streets, betw. Broadway and 7th Ave), and will proceed up 7th Ave., turn right on 50th St,, turn left on 5th Ave., and right on 52nd Street, where it will conclude at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York (11 East 52nd St.). Clarina Bezzola, born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1970, lives and works in New York. A graduate of the Parsons School of Design, New York, she has had solo exhibitions and performances in New York, the United States and throughout Europe. Her latest work includes the performances Judgement Day (2008) and Swiss Miss: a Gathering (2008) as well as the exhibition Zwei Welten (Two Worlds) at Galerie Adler, Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 2009. As fine artist and opera singer, she aspires to translate the slippery and visceral visions of the inner universe into an experience to share.
This performance takes place in conjunction with the exhibition Beauty Contest, which runs from September 21, 2011 to January 3, 2012, at the Austrian Cultural Forum.
This performance is made possible with generous support from TIMES SQUARE ALLIANCE (www.timessquarenyc.org).
