life and limbs is the fourth exhibition in Swiss Institute’s Architecture and Design Series, curated by Austrian artist Anna-Sophie Berger. Considering ‘design’ as a propositional term, Berger has assembled a group of works from a number of disciplines, each of which registers the body as an implicit existential category. Berger, who was originally trained in fashion, has charted a course through her own constellation of references, which she often records in a personal photo-based archive. Juxtaposing disparate artistic practices, transgressive designs for bodily alteration involving mechanical or prosthetic devices are placed in conversation with surrealist drawings and fashion designs. Based in difference and unpredictability, each troubles the boundaries of corporeality on its own terms.
