OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK
OPEN DOORS ON 11 EAST 52ND STREET
SATURDAY, OCT 19 2019, 10:00 AM - 06:00 PM
For two days each October, the annual Open House New York Weekend 2019 unlocks the doors of New York's most important buildings.
Designed by Austrian-born, US architect Raimund Abraham, the landmark building that houses the Austrian Cultural Forum New York makes the most of very limited space. The slender 22-story skyscraper is merely 25 feet wide and 81 feet deep but provides room for exhibition galleries, a flexible theater for performances and concerts, offices, artist guest rooms, and a public library. With its impressive glass and steel facade, architectural critic Kenneth Frampton called it "the most significant modern piece of architecture to be realized in Manhattan since the Seagram Building and the Guggenheim Museum" in an interview with the New York Times.
On October 19, during OHNY Weekend, visitors can tour this exceptionally narrow building, which has been the home for contemporary Austrian culture in America since 2002. Connecting European and American creative visions, members of the public are invited to enjoy the ACFNY's current exhibition and take a guided tour to delve into the details of the building's architecture and history.
Tours through our landmark building include visits to the theater, library, and current exhibition Resident Alien: Austrian Architects in America.
Tour Times: 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm
