AGAINST THE SPECIALIST
WEDNESDAY, SEP 12 2012, 10:00 PM
Following the exhibition opening for AGAINST THE SPECIALIST at the Austrian Cultural Forum, join the curator, Eva Fischer, and participating artists for an informal party at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge, featuring
Akalepse (Truth & Soul, NYC)
Majestic Mood (Groove Merchants Radio, Vienna)
on the decks.
This event will also serve as an informal kick-off event of sorts for the Austrian Cultural Forum's annual Moving Sounds Festival, which begins September 13. Festival participants, musicians and composers will also be on hand to help celebrate the opening of the ACFNY's fall season.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
AKALEPSE Steady at work with the records since 1993 when he first put the needle on one, New York-based Akalepse is the definition of dedicated. Coming up as a Battle DJ in hip-hop's Golden Era, Lepse learned early the importance of moving the crowd. He got his first gig as a tour DJ, DJing for Parrish Smith when PMD's manager saw him rock a party.
When Lepse moved to Brooklyn and started really pushing his mixtapes, it opened up the doors to what is today his worldwide fan base. His tape “Eviva” landed him a ton of gigs, perhaps the most notable being a residency at NYC's most esteemed venue for DJs to play at, APT, which lasted 8 years until the club closed it's doors forever. Successes like these, plus keeping things thorough at every show propelled Akalepse on stage with the likes of KRS-One, Cypress Hill, Kenny Dope, DJ Spinna, Lord Finesse, J-Rocc, DJ Scratch, & Just Blaze to name a few.
Brooklyn's own Truth & Soul records, the funk/soul imprint that is responsible for monstrous acts like Lee Fields and The Expressions and El Michels Affair, hired Lepse five years ago to bring his expertise to the label. Now Lepse is a jack of all trades for the label, from Label Manager to Head of A&R to house DJ.
MAJESTIC MOOD If there's anything any good DJ should be able to do, it is to set a mood. In the case of this cat from Vienna, Austria, the mood is going to be majestic - no matter which musical genres are involved. Inspired by HipHop, he began to explore its various roots - Jazz, Soul, Funk - at an early age and paid his dues playing some residencies all around his hometown.
In recent years, he's been immersing himself in the international Beat movement that fuses HipHop aesthetics with more electronic soundscapes and even deeper bass frequencies. His online radio show Groove Merchants is a good starting point for explorations into the field as it also features interviews with artists like Hudson Mohawke, Waajeed, Tokimonsta & Mount Kimbie. He is also the resident DJ for "The Message Radio Show" on Vienna's Superfly FM and co-hosts the club series Royal Eclectic.
