As part of Moving Sounds 2018, Thomas Schäfer, author of Modellfall Mahler: Kompositorische Rezeption in zeitgenössischer Musik, joins the composition seminar at the Columbia University Department of Music. This event is open to the general public.
Thomas Schäfer (b. 1967 in Hamburg) studied musicology, literature and philosophy at the University of Hamburg, and received a PhD in 1997 at Humboldt University Berlin. In 1998/99 he conducted postdoctural research at Hamburg University, while producing contemporary music at North German Radio in Hamburg. From 2000-07, Schäfer was the curator for the festivals Wien Modern, Hörgänge and responsible for the new music activities at Konzerthaus Vienna (including the concert series „generator“). In 2008, Schäfer was a consultant for Wien Modern, a scientific project related to the music of Roman Haubenstock-Ramati (together with Paul Sacher Foundation, Basel and Music Academy Basel). Since 2009, he is the Director of the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) and Artistic Director of the Darmstadt Summer Course.
